  • This week’s topic was so interesting I decided to do the chat on it!  Weight Loss Myths:  Fact or Fiction?  You’ve heard them…quick fix, easy tricks, magic pills…which weight loss myths are fact and which ones are just plain, well…fiction?  Let’s find out!
  • Sorry I didn’t get to say Hi to everyone!  Somehow I turned off notifications for the comments sooooooo…..sorry!
  • If you are watching the chat somewhere besides Facebook you won’t be able to see the thumbs ups or hearts.  We were using the thumbs and hearts to vote.  If you want to vote later, just comment!
  • Myth:  Some foods are negative calories.  Example, celery has so few calories and so much water that by the time you get done chewing it there is a negative calorie situation.  Fiction!  There are no negative calorie foods.  Even though celery is very low in calories you can’t creative a “negative calorie” situation and a deficit in your caloric intake for the day
  • Myth:  A pound of muscle weighs more than a pound of fat.  Have you heard that one?  I hear people trying to be encouraging by saying “oh you’ve been working out…a pound of muscle weighs more than a pound of fat so that must be why you gained weight this week”.  Fiction!  a pound is a pound.  A pound of fat, a pound of muscle, a pound of water…it’s a pound.  BUT, muscle takes up 4/5 the amount of space as fat plus it’s not dimply.
  • Myth:  You have to avoid all the foods that you like.  Fiction!  If we are going to be successful on Weight Watchers we have to enjoy what we are eating and want to stay on plan long term.  We had someone in the closed group ask if we just eat frozen, fake, artificially sweetened, highly processed low SP food.  Ummmm no, I’d never eat!  Things like Bacon Wrapped Eggs, Weggos, 2 SP Apple Turnovers a’ la Sally…we figure out a way to eat it all!
Bacon Wrapped Asparagus find the recipe here!
Find out how to make Weggos here!

Sally’s 2 Smart Point Apple Pies!

  • Myth: All fats are bad.  FICTION!  Higher fat may mean higher points but some of them can be very good for you!  Avocado, nuts, olive oil,  good fats help you process other things through your system, help skin, nails and hair and can even make you feel fuller and more satisfied.  Just remember to count them.
  • Myth:  You should skip meals.  Makes sense right?  The fewer meals you eat the less points you use and the more weight you lose…FICTION!  Skipping meals can actually make you more hungry, blood sugar drops, Hangry sets in, and decisions get bad.  Eating smaller more frequent meals can keep you satisfied longer, and we all make better decisions when our tummy isn’t overriding our brain.  Protein at every meal (even just a cheese stick and an apple or a boiled egg and a banana) keeps you fuller longer.
  • Myth:  Bread is a no no.  Ummmm Oprah would have bailed on WW a long time ago if we couldn’t eat bread…we can eat bread every day!  so FICTION! Bread, pasta, rice…all on the list.  Some good lower SP options are:  Joseph’s Lavash, Joseph’s Pita, Ole Extreme Wellness tortillas, Aldi Fit & Active bread, Nature’s Own Whitewheat bread, VeeTee Rice, Flatouts, Trader Joe’s Ciabatta Rolls, Smart Baking Hamburger Buns
  • Myth:  You can out exercise what you eat.  Example, splurging after a tennis match.  Walking home after a big meal.  FICTION!  We need to keep indulgences in our plan but you cannot out exercise your intake unless you have gone to extremes…that much exercise would be another form of bulimia and that’s no bueno.  I weigh 145 pounds and earn 6 Fit Points for every 60 minutes of the level walking I do.  If I indulged in something that was 30 Smart Points and planned to cover it with Fit Points that would be FIVE HOURS of walking.  I don’t use my FitPoints to eat…I use them to be Fit!
  • Myth:  You should wait until you feel hungry before you eat (like stomach growling).  FICTION!  If you wait until you actually feel hungry, your tummy is growling, your body will actually make a hormone called Grehlin to make sure you eat.  It STIMULATES your appetite…I don’t know about you but I don’t ever need my appetite to be stimulated!!

according to Healthline.com (see the full story at http://www.healthline.com/nutrition/ghrelin)
    “What is Ghrelin?

Ghrelin is a hormone produced in the gut. It is often termed the hunger hormone, and sometimes called lenomorelin.

It travels through your bloodstream and to your brain, where it tells your brain to become hungry and seek out food.

Ghrelin’s main function is to increase appetite. It makes you consume more food, take in more caloriesand store fat (711).”

  • Myth:  healthy eating is expensive (or too expensive).  FACT & FICTION!  Fact is if you only buy fancy, trendy, name brand and sometimes prepared foods they can be pretty pricey.  Example:  if I go to Whole Foods and by an organic, funky name brand light bread I will pay $$$.  If I purchase a similarly pointed bread from a national chain it will cost me $$.  But if I select a store brand or even Aldi Light & Fit the price falls to $.  I’m not saying don’t buy froofy food in pretty packing if you like it.  Just know your options if you are on a budget.  The quick and easy way to save without going into a whole other chat:  Buy in bulk when you can.  Buy “day old” and “last day” items when you can and freeze or prep for later.  Don’t shop end caps at ANY store…that’s where they put what they want you to buy!  Choose store brands, or discounted stores like Aldi, Dollar General, Family Dollar, etc when you can.  For produce try to buy what’s in season!
  • Myth:  Salads are healthy and low Smart Points.  Doesn’t every person who finds out you are on a weight loss journey just assume you are eating salad every day?  Everyone, and I mean everyone assumes salads are always the best choice.  FACT & FICTION!  Depends on what you choose.  I eat salads now because I like them and enjoy them, not just because they are a salad.  Know Before You Go!  Applebee’s full size Oriental Grilled Chicken salad with dressing is…..drum roll (take a deep breath)….40 Smart Points.  Or we could have gotten a 6 oz Sirloin, garlic mashed potatoes with the butter and steamed broccoli for only 18 SP.  Not saying salads are off the list, just saying know what you’re getting.  My at home go to salad is Arugula/spinach, Trader Joe’s Fat Free Feta, strawberries, cucumbers, Trader Joe’s Goddess dressing with a cup of Trader Joe’s Tomato Feta Soup for only 9 Smart Points.  Not 40.
  •  Myth:  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Well of course I think it is because I want you to eat Weggos, My Secret Recipe Scrambled Eggs or an Egg Mug teee heee!  But I personally believe FACT!  I think it affects your blood sugar level, I know I am personally less likely to overeat later in the day, I am a firm believer it needs to be protein…an egg, string cheese wrapped in ham, nuts, peanut butter & banana, etc
  • Myth:  Changing what you drink can help you lose weight faster.  FACT!  Many of us don’t realize how many Smart Points we are using with those splashes of cream in the coffee, juice seems innocent enough, sugared soft drinks are plentiful and getting larger every day.  One lady in our group was doing everything right but the scales weren’t budging.  She was just putting a “little” creamer in her coffee…but it was like 6 times a day for like 8 to 10 SP a day!  Calm down, sit down, if you’re from the south you’re going to pass out….Mickey D’s Sweet Tea here is $1 because it’s that important to our culture, seriously.  BUT if you swapped out  one McD $1 Sweet Tea per day that’s 9 SP.  Times 7 days a week is 63 SP a week.  Yikes!  Side note that sweet tea is also 280 calories, so if you have been drinking 1 per day you would eliminate enough calories to lose a pound every 12.5 days by doing nothing other than changing a beverage!
  • Myth:  If you lose less than a pound a week you will never reach your goal.  Ever heard of the turtle club?  FICTION!  If I had been happy with all of my 0.2 pound losses I would have reached goal in 1998.  Because I spent the first 20 years on WW desiring…nay demanding, at least a pound a week or just give it up and gain it all back (why was giving up and gaining it back ever an option in my head???  That option makes no sense.  If you had a flat tire you wouldn’t slash the other three, set your car on fire and walk off would you?).  It doesn’t feel good when you’re in a slump, on a plateau, or feels like it’s dragging but seriously, really, trust me, slow and steady wins this race.  Keep racing!

Where else can you find The Egg?

  • YouTube – you can go to the chats always on YouTube! The cover photo for YouTube looks just like the Page because it is also public.  You can search IFYOUHAVEANEGG and it should pull up all the WW If You Have an Egg Chats and the first one should be the Playlist of all the videos to date.  If you click on Playlist you can watch them all in order and binge watch The Egg hahaha.  If you have a YouTube account you can subscribe, make your own playlists, etc.  If you are watching as a guest you can still watch all you want, you just can’t like, share, comment and save on a playlist.  I really really appreciate when you Like, Share, Comment and Subscribe!!
  • The Blog – ifyouhaveanegg.com this is where I journal all my recipes, the chats, the transcripts for the chats, details of new things, etc. It always has the three most current at the top.  There is a Click Here for More New Recipes and you can search by category.  If there are links to other recipes from within the post it will take you straight there.  My Story is found herehttp://www.ifyouhaveanegg.com/?page_id=9   I have been a WW for 24+ years and got to goal in 2014, Lifetime for going on three years and counting!  If you scroll over the pictures you can save these recipes and meal ideas to your Yummly Box, Pinterest, Twitter, you can Print, share on Facebook, etc

Yes I do charge for the app.  I have invested over $1,500 in development and there are monthly fees not to mention the time to keep it all updated.  But the $2.99 is ONE TIME.  You get all the Egg benefits for on low price and never pay again.  Available for Android and Apple.  If you are on an iPad though you have to switch it to “iPhone only” for some bizarre reason.  You only buy once on Apple for both devices.  Use the three lines in the upper left corner to bring down the menu to find the chats on YouTube, New Recipes, 7 Day Meal Plans, Shopping Guides (Trader Joe’s, Aldi, Whole Foods, National Brands, Girl Scout Cookies, Halloween Candy, Costco)
  • Additional Resources: whether you are doing WW Online, attending meetings, or just gleaning what you can from us you have resources!  Use the recipes and meal ideas in your weekly from the meeting.  Search hashtags like #weightwatchers on social media to get some great ideas.  If you are using ETools you can scan, track, keep up with favorite foods and ideas.  Or if you like pen and paper grab a paper track every week.  My daughter Kc likes to journal and they are so much fun with pretty markers and *squeal* stickers!  Resources from moi:
    • I use index cards to keep a written record that I can touch, see, carry with me and then sort by Smart Points Value. If it’s a real I post it in a printable version on the blog:  ifyouhaveanegg.com  I can also sort these and know what my points are going to be for the day.  Bu-bam…7 sets of cards = 7 days = you guessed it…home base for me
