WW News April 2021:

  • There were no East TN Zoom meetings today so I only have one update on the in person workshops for Knoxville. Saturday, April 17th there are workshops with Sheryl M at 8am and 9:30am. Monday, April 19 there is one in person workshop with Gwen R at 12:15pm. On Thursday, April 22 there is one in person workshop with Sandi P
    • Don’t Know: The exact schedule. I was late coming into the Zoom so I am waiting until the days, times and coaches are in print before I announce them
    • Do Know: They begin Saturday, April 17th for the Knoxville workshops
    • Do Know: There are no reservations required but seating is limited and is first come first serve
    • Do Know: Additional seating and workshops will be determined by how attendance during the Phase 1 reopening
    • Don’t Know: How this affects Lifetime Members who were in good standing and already have benefits extended through June 30th
    • Do Know: Some Zoom workshops (Virtual) will end as the in person workshops start to expand after Phase 1
    • Don’t Know: When those Zoom workshops will end
    • Do Know: I’m SUPER PUMPED to sit my bottom in a chair again but I’m also SUPER SAD that our Sundays afternoons together may come to an end with Gwen. Seriously. I hadn’t even considered that while I was praying for bottoms in chairs….so we need to think about how we handle this face to face time together…ok?

Last week during Chat #217: What’s Your Superpower? we discovered that sometimes traits we already possess are actually super powers that may come in handy and even make a part of your journey easier…because you are already good at it!  A “kind” person may figure out they can use that very same power to be kind to themselves when they’ve had a hiccup. Or someone that is naturally organized may find it easier to tap into that super power to rock the most organized tracker you’ve ever seen! So what do you do?

  1. Check with a friend: Ask a friend how they would fill in the blank I asked above
  2. Picture this: Think about a time when you used the trait your friend used to describe you
  3. Make a statement: Use that trait to create a statement “you know what?  I am _______________!”
  4. Pen to Paper: Write it down somewhere that you can see it. The fridge, your bathroom mirror, on your monitor at work. You are SUPER…and this is your POWER!

Your homework for last week’s chat #WhatsYourSuperpower was to write down the superpower statement you just created…then type it, snap it, however you wanted to share it and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Let’s see how you did!

  • Lynn’s superpower is being an encourager. Like Gwen always says, it’s hard to shine a light on someone else’s path without shining a little on your own 🙂
  • Sylvia’s super power is dependability. Others can count on her to be there when they need them, so she can depend on herself to do the next right thing on her own journey!
  • Carol Lou’s super power is optimism! You can bet her practice talking other people “off a ledge” has come in handy a time or two for herself!

Bravo, you did it!

This Week’s Topic: Temptation Bundling

Temptation Bundling is simply pairing something you LOVE to do with something that you should but don’t really want to do.

How does that work? Think of something non weight loss journey related that you have to do or at least should do but you know you won’t ever start unless it’s paired with something you love. For me that is housework. At my own house. I can clean someone else’s house like a pro when they need me, but my house? Yuck. No. Don’t make me. But I LOVE music. Loud, eardrum popping, drive your neighbors crazy music…and I love to sing to it even more. So what do I do when I have to clean? I pop in my head phones, hope my neighbors can’t hear me, and go to town!

So let’s get back to our journey…what do you do?

  1. Should Do: Make a short list (no more than 3 things) that you know you really should be doing but you’re just having a hard time doing them
  2. Love to Do: Now make a list of up to three seemingly unrelated things that you LOVE to do
  3. Pair Them Up: Choose one or two of the “shoulds” and pair them with a “love”. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can mark one or more items off  your list!

This Week’s Homework: #TemptationBundling

Your homework for this week is #TemptationBundling. Pick one of the Should Do’s, pair it with a Love to Do and…then type it, snap it, however you want to share it and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Don’t forget to do your homework #TemptationBundling and tag me when you share on social media!

Eggstra Credit: Pickling Versus Fermenting Eggs (aka: what do we do with our leftover Easter Eggs??)

Alyssa had a great time this Easter, and at 3 years old I dare say her hands had more dye on them than any of the eggs. I let her hide, drop, re-hide, re-dye eight of the eggs but what on earth do you do with the rest?

Oh sure, there’s the obvious like colorful deviled eggs, egg salad, tuna salad. But with my new fascination of gardening, fermenting, pickling and canning I thought we would try something different!

What is the difference between pickling and fermenting?

According to a post from Nutrition You Can Use there are two basic differences in pickled versus fermented foods: “The main difference between pickled and fermented foods is how they’re made.

  • With pickling, you’re immersing the ingredients in something acidic – like vinegar. The process alters the texture and the taste of food, creating a sour flavor.
  • Fermenting doesn’t involve any extra acid. Instead, the sour taste comes from the reaction between compounds in the food and bacteria that are naturally present.

Basically, pickled foods are preserved through the acidity, while fermented foods are preserved through the bacteria and the fermentation processes.” (Source: Nutrition You Can Use)

I love the next example they use in this comparison. If you’ve ever taken a Logics class (especially Syllogism) you know that all poodles are dogs but not all dogs are poodles (think about that one for a minute!). Fermenting is a type of pickling but not all pickling is fermenting.  Mind. Blown.

So Pickling is a general term used when foods are preserved using acid to cause a reaction in the food. Fermenting is also a form of pickling but the food is preserved due to a chemical reaction involving the food and bacteria (good bacteria, calm down) instead of something else being added to cause the reaction. Are we all completely confused now? Or are you  more fascinated than ever!

So let’s make some eggs!
