WW (Weight Watchers) Chat #166: Tips for Stocking Your Kitchen

Comments are Disabled In the spirit of transparency, I do receive commission from mentioning some of the products in this post. Any commission I earn comes at no additional cost to you and I’ll never recommend products that I don’t use, love and believe in.

And another crazy week! Just when we think it can’t get any more strange or stressful… BAM! At this time more than ever we have to focus on things other than being perfect, in all areas of our lives.

Your homework for the week was to find ways to give yourself a break for not being perfect and share with me on social media… Let’s see how you ladies did with your homework!

  • Sherry says #iamnormal “just because things are difficult right now I will make and follow a schedule with eating right and exercise. Staying positive!”
  • Carla says “The gym has closed. I’m not going to beat myself up this time because #iamnormal. Instead I’m going to work out with my Leslie Sansone on DVD!”
  • Carol Lou says “Just because I am working from home and have extra food in the house does not mean I have to eat it all at once! I will still plan and track because #iamnormal.”

Bravo ladies, you nailed it!

This Week’s Topic: 10 Tips for Stocking Your Kitchen

Or as many of us are facing – “re”stocking your kitchen. By the time this posts on YouTube at least 10 states will have issued some version of a “shelter in place” plan either at the state government level or on a county by county basis. (just since I wrote this Knox County has been placed on a #saferathome status)

What does that mean? Should I panic and go buy food?

Each county or state has its own version in place but none of them so far are mandatory “lockdowns” which would mean you couldn’t leave your house for any reason. (Things are changing daily if not hourly, so please check your local sources for current restrictions.)As of this Live Chat date I am still considering this a 2 week camping-in-your-own-house prep. We talked last week (Chat #165) about what “kinds” of things to stock up on. This week, let’s focus on “how much” to stock.

Water
Since we are pretending like we are camping I’ll tell you what we do. I get one gallon of water per person per day. Whether it’s a gallon jug or individual bottles. I am assuming we will not lose access to clean water but always have a way to boil some as a backup.

Snack Bars, Meat Sticks, Premade PB Crackers, Tuna Packs, etc
Enough for each person to have one of each for at least 7 days. You shouldn’t eat all the choices every day or you will have #ateallmyquarantinesnacks

Canned Beans, Meats, and Meals (That don’t require heat or a can opener)
Remember these have long shelf lives for the most part so I get 2 per person per day. If you don’t use them you can save them for a real camping trip or donate to a food pantry when this is all done.

Frozen or Perishable Foods
Some will disagree with me, but I say only stock enough to last 3 to 4 days. If you get stuck away from home, your power goes out, or if you have a cranky fridge like we do, you don’t want to waste money throwing away food later.

This Week’s Homework: #plannotpanic

For your homework this week I want you to first raise your right hand and promise me you won’t panic. So what if you didn’t stock up before today? The stores are restocking. You have time.

And then post a list of 3 things you will plan to be stocked up on (for 2 weeks only!) and then repeat with me – I will #plannotpanic. Don’t forget to tag me on social media:

Extra Credit: Let’s Zoom!

Bad News: All WW in-person workshops are cancelled until further notice

Good News: We can Zoom! Some important answers for new WW Virtual Zoom users are below.

What is Zoom?
Zoom is an online and app-supported platform for holding meetings.

Do I have to pay to go to a Zoom virtual meeting?
If you are an active WW Member (including Lifetime) you should have received a link by email. Alternatively, you can log into WW go to Connect and Browse Groups. Type in your city and you should see a list of groups or one group if your city isn’t large enough for its own group.

Should I join more than one group?
Please don’t. The group site during a Zoom workshop is limited and you can inadvertently block someone from attending.

What if I was on a Monthly Pass or a Lifetime member with eTools when workshops were paused?
All LT members who have current eTools accounts will get automatic free 4-week extensions. No code will be necessary and the member doesn’t have to do anything to claim it. March/April weigh-ins will be waived so a member who misses March/April but is within 2 pounds in May will have free status. Ours is a franchise location so check your location for details but Monthly Passes will continue to be charged as usual since your pass provides you unlimited access to tools, support, and now virtual meetings.

Once I have Zoom and have found my group, then what?
Your group should post a link to use to join the chats as well as a list of workshop times. For your first workshop, go ahead and join about 15 minutes early so you can play with all the buttons and get comfortable with using Zoom. In particular you will want to find:

  • Microphone (mute/unmute)
  • Video (on or off)
    • Hint: You can go into settings and choose whether to auto connect to audio, always mute the microphone, always turn off your video, and always show video preview
  • Raise Hand
  • Chat
  • Clap / Thumbs Up

Who is leading the workshop? Is it my leader?
There should be a schedule posted in your group. Each workshop will have a team – one host and one co-host – to run the chat box and provide support for the host.

How do we let them know we have a comment or question?
While you are checking out the buttons, make note of where the “raise hand” function is for the device you are on.

What will they be talking about?
This is a normal workshop!

Will this be recorded so I can go back and watch later?
No. At this time there is no plan to do that. If you need a recap later you can always watch our chats on YouTube.

How do they keep so many people from talking over the top of each other?
The host and co-host can mute or unmute all or individuals one at a time when they “raise their hand”

Can I see who else is attending?
Yes! If they choose to allow video streaming you can scroll through (or use the gallery feature depending on the device) and look for familiar faces. If they choose not to allow video you can still see some names.  And remember if you chose video they can see you…and your spouse…and your cat. Just keep that in mind!

Last… Life is weird right now, why even bother?
The first workshop I attended wasn’t my beloved Gwen. My accountabilibuddy Karen wasn’t there. But the leader closed with one of the most inspirational things I’ve heard this week: “Remember – this is social distancing NOT emotional distancing.”
