News and Reviews

Deanna and others had questions about losing and gaining the same weight over and over again.  Can we chat about that for just a second?  I’m actually going to re-review Chat #312 How To Handle A Small Weight Gain which came right after Chat #311 How to Handle A Plateau rather than the topic from two weeks ago because this is THAT IMPORTANT!  I will still recognize completed homework and you can go back and watch / listen to Chat #327 if you would like later.

Last week in Chat #327 How To Eat in Tricky Situations I said I don’t know about you, but sometimes just being awake constitutes a tricky situation 🙂

But seriously, if you’ve ever gotten to noon and realized you were already out of points for the day you know what I mean. Tricky might mean something different on any given day but think things  like:  ran out of points, hungry between a planned meal, went off track and needed to reset, at a restaurant with too many options and so on.

Three Fast Facts from WW:

Write Yourself a Love Letter

Ok it’s really more of a love “list” but research proves that incorporating the foods you already love can help healthy eating be more enjoyable. Why not make a quick list of your faves and put it somewhere you’ll see it often.  Then when that noon time point “uh oh” tricky situation happens you’ll be ready to go!

Lean on Me

This is a fact, WW says so!  Leaning on those lower or no point go to foods you just wrote down on your list unlocks opportunities to enjoy higher point foods! Already having your list (and better yet having those go to’s in your fridge and pantry) gives you a third leg to stand on when a tricky situation means higher point foods. And we all know a triangle is stronger than trying to stand on just your two legs alone!

Knowledge is Power

Identifying those go-to foods ahead of time and knowing which ones you have on hand or have easy access to keeps you from having to make a tough decision during those challenging situations!  Quick example, since this diagnosis is so new for our son in law I asked him to choose from a list I made of lower carb, better nutritional value, easy for all of us to eat items. Now that I have his “love list” Saturday night dinners at their house should never be tricky!

Your homework was #MyLoveList. Make a “love list” during this cool and calm time and have it where you can find it for those tricky times. I guarantee something already popped in your head while we were talking, right it down, do your homework and that decision will be a snap next time!  Then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

  • Mary Ann has a great list!
Fruits : watermelon , cherries , grapes , strawberries and blueberries.
Meats : turkey , chicken , and ground beef and eggs .
Vegetables : Spaghetti squash , green pepper , carrots and salad .
Dairy : Cheeses of any kind . Yogurt nonfat greek and cottage cheese
  • Jeanne’s love language is zero point foods! Shrimp, chicken, eggs, Nectarines especially for salsas, tomatoes, berries, cucumbers, lettuces, non-fat yogurt. Basically all 0 point foods
  • Casey’s love list for hubby Allan was a taco bar this weekend with Flatouts, ground turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, corn and bean salsa, light sour cream and a little cheese.  She made it for Allan but we ALL felt the love!

Bravo, you did it!

This Week’s Topic: “Stressed? Take 5!”

Stopped in traffic. Finding out you forgot to pay a bill. Getting a call that the child you just dropped off at school threw up. Stressed now just thinking about it?

If you are alive and breathing you are under some form of stress. From the time you are born someone has stuck a bottle, a cookie, or a high caloric beverage in your mouth to ease stress when it rears its ugly head.

Three Fast Facts from WW:

Tomorrow will have enough worry of its own

Even the Bible will tell you to stop worrying about the past, quit anticipating the disaster in the future.
Matthew 6:34

New International Version “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”

Worrying about the past or stressing about what “might” happen in the future can cause more stress

Stressed spelled backwards is Desserts

Don’t believe me?  Stop for a second and check it out. It’s no wonder that when we feel stressed we are more likely to overeat.

Anchor against the storm

Here we go with the Bible verses again (hey, it’s Sunday and I’m listening to a 2 hour women’s prison ministry while I’m typing). If you are in the middle of the ocean (life) and a storm whips up out of nowhere (again, life) what do you do to keep from being sucked off course (stuck in traffic), flipped upside down (finding that unpaid bill), whirled around again (phone call from school), swallowed by a whale, spit out on shore and left for dead.
Drop.

That.

Anchor.

Today’s anchor is a 5 step breathing and focusing exercise we have discussed before on this WW journey.

  1. Take a deep breath and name 5 things you can see
  2. Take a deep breath and name 4 things you can feel
  3. Take a deep breath and name 3 things you can hear
  4. Take a deep breath and name 2 things you can smell
  5. Take one more deep breath and name 1 thing you can taste

How do you feel?

This Week’s Homework: ##DropThatAnchor

Your homework for this week is #DropThatAnchor. One time this week when stress rears its ugly head do the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 session and let us know how you feel afterwards.  If you want to list each item feel free! If not, just tell us how you felt before the anchor and then after. I guarantee a situation already popped in your head while we were talking, right it down, do your homework and dropping that anchor will be a snap next time!  Then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Don’t forget to do your homework #DropThatAnchor and tag me when you share on social media!

Extra Credit: “Starbucks” Copycat Egg Bites Instant Pot Test!

This week we are testing the “Starbucks” Egg Bites which I have been told are $5 for two?  How much are they in your area?

There were several variables to choose from when doing this experiment vs just going down to Starbucks and buying them. These are a few of the pros and cons that I had to choose between!

  • Price – $5 for 2 at Starbucks in Knoxville. Mine are averaging out to be about $1 for 2
  • Mix before or add after – there was much debate about this. I found that adding after was actually I poured the egg mixture into the silicone cups easier and did just as well
  • Mixing method – there was even bigger debate on the mixing method.  Immersion blender, blender, fork, whisk, food processor.  I didn’t find the immersion blender any “fluffier” and the whisk worked fine for me
  • Cooking Time & Temp – I’m still playing with this one. As soon as I perfect my method I will do a separate video! I can say that cooking on Low I found to require more time than what I found posted other places
  • To spray or not to spray? – Trust me, spray
  • Double Stack – A few sites said you could stack the egg molds straight on top and others said to stagger them. They worked better for me when they were staggered and not directly on top. I can’t explain it but it worked!
  • Using the cover – PLEASE note that all silicone egg molds do NOT come with a silicone lid. If you have one of these hard plastic kinds just leave it for storing and sub aluminum foil instead
  • Cottage Cheese mandatory – gag. You know me.I don’t care how many times you tell me it’s going to melt or blend or whatever cottage cheese tomfoolery you are peddling but I skipped it. If you like cottage cheese, knock yourself out and let everyone know how they turned out
  • Baking powder – I tried with and without and ???
  • Cooking other ingredients first – I only found that necessary if it was something like chicken or bacon OR if it was a more tough veggie like peppers. Please thoroughly cook any uncooked meat first. The veggies were a simple sautee in the instant pot first and voila

The biggest take aways that I found were:

  • Making these at home reduced my temptation to get a sweet drink to go along with them. If I’m at Starbucks, I’m definitely tempted to get a Java Chip Frappuccino!
  • The silicone cups made them so simple and easy! Definitely recommend.
  • The cooking time and temp still need work. I did the low temp, but I had to add extra time. I will still work on fine tuning it, and there will be an update when I figure out what works for me!

Keep watching for more testing, playing, and recipes! I’m so excited and you should be too.

Tests and Results:

I have visited several websites, watched videos and consulted with people who have eaten these, purchased all of the supplies, and we are ready to test!
