Last week’s Chat #195: The Truth About Willpower was a challenge in “be careful what you pray for”. Last Sunday, John’s dad was headed to rehab and John was feeling good about the week ahead. I prayed for comfort, peace, and healing. Wow… I got it. John’s dad is now comfortable, at peace and healed for eternity.

After the extreme roller coaster of emotions, things I can’t unsee or forget from the ER and the ICU, and a host of food misfortunes and opportunities alike, willpower is NOT what I needed. I needed last week’s chat to remind me that #ihavethepower

Your homework this week was to forget the cliche willpower and find something(s) that give YOU the power to control your journey. Let’s see how you did:

  • Barbara says #ihavethepower to not eat after 8 pm, to walk on her lunch break when it’s nice out, and to be consistent about drinking water.
  • Jennie doesn’t always feel like she has a lot of willpower, but she is thankful for all of the examples of how to take her power back!
  • Kelly (yours truly) says #ihavethepower to enjoy the yummy food that everyone has brought for the funeral, but also to leave it at Casey’s so I’m not tempted to scarf it all down when I’m home alone without witnesses.  I also have the power to surround myself with friends who know to bring salads, fresh veggies and unsweet tea for me!

Bravo ladies, you nailed it!

This Week’s Topic: What’s Your Why

And here we go again. Someone at WW creative is peeking into my life and writing topics in sync with my current walk. My “why” has been many things: weigh X pounds for a class reunion;  not have to hide when a camera comes out;  be comfortable in my clothes.  And then later in life it became not to be on as many meds as my parents or suffer the same health issues as they did. After this week (month really), it’s be honest about my body and not become a preventable burden on my family.

Your “Why” may change, it probably will change… but today, just for today take a few minutes to follow the guide in your Weekly and:

  1. Think Fast: If someone said “why are you doing WW?” don’t think, just answer. What’s the first thing that rolled off your tongue? Say it out loud, we can’t hear you but we are with you!
  2. Dig Deep: When you achieve your why how will that feel? What will it mean to you, your family or your friends?
  3. Try again: Now ask yourself that first question again… and keep asking it until you uncover why it is truly important to you. Call it your “a-ha!” moment
  4. Personalize it: Now put your politically correct Jesus answer away and say your most genuine, personal to you reason. And repeat it. And write it down. And put it somewhere you will see it, and believe it.

This Week’s Homework: #whatsyourwhy

Whys will come and whys will go… but find your current one, be honest about it, make it yours, and write it down where you can see it.  Post it and tag me for your homework AND to earn your next super cool badge!

Extra Credit: Let’s Start Talking Turkey Day!

I hate to break the news but Thanks-Christma-NewYear is right around the corner. We are literally exactly a month until this pressure cooker of holiday obligations, goodies, stress levels, and new questions about how to celebrate safely while maintaining some form of normalcy. How on earth are we supposed to do all that and stay on track with our weight loss plan?

Our holidays haven’t been “normal” for several years and now here we go… COVID, more empty seats at the table, a new normal for our family to sort out. But that doesn’t mean I throw caution to the wind and return to old habits, miserable meals, and mindless eating just because it’s a holiday.

This year I’m starting early and planning some egg-stra special treats for me, for us, for you! We have deviled eggs at every holiday meal and they were always different. My dad made them with mayo, mustard, and sliced olives. My mom used vegan mayo, mustard, and sweet pickle relish. My mother in law is a paprika deviled egger. It’s a dish everyone can make so why not?

This year I’ve created three that are good for everyone left on our list of guests. One will even make a good low point breakfast fill in instead of loading up on sausage balls and cinnamon rolls!
