WW News February 2022:

  • Today is the Super Bowl. Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day! We will talk more about food “opportunities” in the second half but do you have a plan?
  • February was the official kick off of on demand delivery of Girl Scout Cookies by Door Dash. Please don’t set yourself up for that. If you want to support the scouts but know these once a year treats will be a breaking point for your weightloss journey enter another address if you do choose the Door Dash option. Maybe have them delivered to your ex boyfriend’s new skinny girlfriend’s house. I mean it’s for the scouts…I’m just sayin LOL. Also, beginning February 18, enter your zip code into the Girl Scout Cookie Finder at www.girlscoutcookies.org to find a booth near you, to purchase cookies from a local Girl Scout troop for delivery, or to donate cookies to first responders and local causes. I highly recommend the first responders and local causes option, ok?

The month’s theme is “Embrace Now” and we will spend the entire month remembering that it’s good to plan ahead, smart to check your rear view mirror, but sometimes you just need to be in the here and now!

Last week during Chat #259: 2022 WW Olympics we chatted about how fascinated Beau is at only 4 months with the Winter Olympics. I’m not kidding. John stepped in front of the tv during curling and she was craning her neck to see around him. At the 3am bottle and snuggling she didn’t cry at all. Instead she enjoyed her 6 ounces while enjoying some snowboarding. She was mesmerized and so was I!

What does this have to do with WW? Being up at 3am meant watching events I’d never seen before and I’m going to be honest…after about the third person went down on their bottom I was asking myself what was the point? Are these olympic-level athletes or is the course just so icy no one is going to pull this off?

Suddenly it was clear. This isn’t an all or nothing, only perfection matters run down the slope. Each run is a test of the frozen waters, not giving up, and certainly not giving in. Are you an olympic-level Weight Watcher? Let’s find out!

Bronze Medal

You’ve been a WW’er before. Maybe it’s only once, maybe it’s a dozen times. But pandemic or not here you are. You know the plan works and won’t give up, even though some days it doesn’t look too pretty.

Silver Medal

You like a good blue dot, but aren’t obsessed with it. If you’ve had a bad day (or week) it doesn’t take too long for you to shake it off and get back on plan. Your support team is good and your accountabilibuddies are on board with your journey no matter how messy it gets.

Gold Medal

You’ve been at this long enough you realize this is not a “perfection” sport. A lot of practice has made your actions permanent, not perfect. You know a triple digit day doesn’t mean you lost, it means you tracked! Your pep talks with Bronze and Silver medalists are spot on, but as a Gold Medal winner your inner voice is your own best cheerleader!

Your homework for last week was #PracticeMakesPermanent. This week I want you to tell us if your practice has made you a Bronze, Silver or Gold Medal winner on this WW journey….and then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Let’s see how you did!

  • Katy literally experienced the same brutal weather conditions as some of the Olympians this week and had to skip her coffee walks when it was zero or below (brrr). She’s a silver medalist though and missing a few days doesn’t mean she’s ready to toss this habit to the side!
  • Mary Ann stood on that silver medal podium also this week. She didn’t hit 100% of her intentions for this week, but she dusted off and got right back on the track to where she wanted to be!
  • Julie was gold medal status all the way this week. She has a sweet student bring her a maple bar doughnut and go on and on about how it was just for her and it was the student’s favorite. Without even breaking a sweat she scooted it away from her workspace saying she didn’t want it to get messed up. Because she’s a WW pro she has an internal code for “it’s out of the way, I’ll give it to someone later.” She saved some feelings and also a huge number of points!

Bravo, you did it!

This Week’s Topic: Unexpected  Food “Opportunities”

Think of a favorite food. Doesn’t have to be anything special, could be something you can get, make, eat whenever you’d like. Got something in mind?

Since you all are shouting faves I’m going to pick one. Pizza. I love pizza. John would eat it every day. There are lots of “opportunities” for me to have pizza when I totally wasn’t planning it. But I also try to  plan a pizza opportunity a couple of Tuesday nights a month after WW as a treat (not a binge because I’ve weighed in, just a treat). But when those “opportunities” present themselves at a time I’m not planning them, I have some decisions to make.

On the other hand “opportunities” aren’t always bad or to be avoided necessarily. Gwen told us a story Tuesday of a trip her and her husband took that landed them at a once in a lifetime hotel stay. The hotel was pretty famous for its food, but the dessert…some kind of chocolate molten “something or the other” had to be ordered at the beginning of your meal because it took so long to prepare. Should you take this one  Pass? Gwen’s husband will tell you years later they should have taken it.

So how do you know which ones to take and when to say pass?

Is it a deal breaker?

By deal breaker I mean is taking this opportunity going to blow the deal you made with yourself about your plan? Or set you off in a way that’s hard to come back? Or could you go ahead and preplan the rest of the meals for your day or week and fit these points in?

Is it as it should be?

That sounded very Harry Potter or Lord of The Rings when I said it out loud. But is it as it should be? Is it warm enough? Cold enough? Wet and soggy or hot and crispy? I can figure out how to work the rest of my week around some fresh, super hot and salty french fries. But I had to learn not to eat the soggy leftover fries that my dad had leftover or were in the bottom of a bag the next day.

Is it once in a lifetime or rinse repeat?

So the “opportunity” presents itself. Stop and count to five while you breathe and ask yourself three questions:

  1. Is this something I could get again? Maybe a time when I’ve planned a little better and I could enjoy it with some dignity
  2. Am I eating this because I want to or someone else wants me to?
  3. Will I look back on this moment days, weeks, or even years later and regret passing by?

This Week’s Homework: #OpportunityKnocks

Your homework for this week is #OpportunityKnocks. When you are faced with a food “opportunity” this week let us know if you answered that knocking door or closed it….and then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Don’t forget to do your homework #OpportunityKnocks and tag me when you share on social media!

Extra Credit: Air Fryer Candied Jalapenos

We mentioned this delicious dish in last week’s extra credit and I’ve had lots of questions on how to make these and I’m excited to share my air fryer candied jalapenos with you! You heard me talk last week about my plans for a taco bar and I still have plenty of those ingredients left in my fridge, so tonight I’m going to be making a Chipotle-style bowl topped with candied jalapenos.

Pro Tip: If you’re sensitive to the oils in peppers, be sure to wear gloves while you cut up your jalapenos and wash your hands before touching your face!

To make candied jalapenos, you’ll start by washing and thinly slicing your fresh jalapeno peppers. Place these in the bottom of your air fryer basket (or use an air-fryer-safe pan if you prefer), spritz them with nonstick spray, and top with Truvia baking blend. Cook these in your air fryer at 400 degrees for about 8 minutes, checking and shaking at 4 minutes.

For my bowl I’m using a half cup of brown rice (which might be one of your zero point foods) as the base. You could substitute in black beans if you chose those as a zero point food.

I topped that brown rice base with shredded lettuce mix, roughly half a cup of shredded chicken breast with Dak’s Street Taco seasoning, 2 tbsp of Wholly Guacamole spicy pico over guacamole dip (perfect if avocado is one of your zero point foods), queso, light sour cream, fresh cilantro microgreens, and of course my air fryer candied jalapenos.

Other great toppings include non-fat plain Greek yogurt (in place of sour cream), black olives, tomatoes, and whatever else you love!
