WW News and Reviews May 2022

  • In case you missed it…it’s Peach Season! Stay tuned for multiple peach ideas this month 🙂  But I do need to know…are you a Georgia Peach or a South Carolina Peach?
  • Egglette Julie has started a summer challenge over in the IYHAE Facebook Group to stay focused and set a goal to lose 15 pounds before the summer is over. If you’d like to join head on over, it’s never too late!
  • Happy Memorial Day Weekend! I hope you are relaxing while remembering that Memorial Day is for those who never made it out of their uniform. Thank you for your service and sacrifice!

The month’s theme is “Myth Busting” and we will spend the entire month discussing some food, weight loss and other myths and busting them!

Last week during Chat #273: How To Squeeze More Movement Into Your Day, we realized that movement doesn’t mean running a marathon or even sweating.

If I asked:

  • Did you walk your dog today?
  • Did you play with your child / grandchild today?
  • Did you dig in your flower bed / garden today?

And then asked “did you get in some exercise today,” what would you say?

Myth: If you don’t exert yourself for at least 30 minutes at a time you might as well not even bother

FACT: While it is good to get in 30 plus minutes per day of movement, just fitting in multiple small amounts of moving (like dancing while you clean or hula hooping during commercials) counts as moving

Myth: It doesn’t count if you don’t sweat

FACT:  According to Healthline.com you in fact are not burning more calories just because you are sweating during a “workout” and if or how much you sweat is actually more due to other conditions like:

  • how hard you work out
  • weather conditions
  • genetics
  • your fitness level
  • health conditions
  • where you exercise

Myth: Office jobs are sedentary

FACT:  Many of them are only sedentary if you let them be! Two cases in point:

  • #1 Gwen has a member of another group who thought her desk job was sedentary and she wasn’t getting any steps in all day. After she wore a fitness device for a few weeks she found out she was getting MOST of her steps at her very non-sedentary job and it was after she got home that she was sitting!
  • #2 I own a business that keeps me “tied” to a very small space in our building. I was getting frustrated with my “during the day” steps until I made a few changes: now I come up front to get each client, I walk them to both rooms and back, and I take each project upstairs to our back office as I complete them…that’s added almost 2,000 steps a day!

Your homework for last week was #TheJustGetUpClub

Your homework for this week is #TheJustGetUpClub. You can ALL do this one, and honestly I expect to hear from all 13,000 of you. Ok, not really but this one is soooooo easy. To be in the just get up club you only have to add ONE MOVE ONE DAY this week. You could take mail to a co-worker, change the channel with your finger instead of the remote (that is, if you can even find that button on your tv LOL), or dance with a toddler during the end credits to Tangled, literally anything!….and then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Let’s see how you did!

  • Susy lives in the Pacific Northwest and didn’t let the humid weather stop her…she skipped the makeup and just went outside for some movement!
  • Carol Lou double dipped on the #justgetupclub and shook out all the rugs, vacuumed and got her cleaning all done on Saturday…so she has the rest of the weekend off!
  • Mary Ann has a broken foot (oof!) but needed to help her son with a poster so she got up on the couch and stood with one knee on a chair rather than sitting on the couch!

This Week’s Topic: How to Make Habits That Stick

There are just under 30 weeks before Christmas…do you know how many new habits we can make AND stick between now and then?

The best advice I can give you for sticking with new habits is to DO something and not NOT do something. Let’s see how!

Myth: The only way I can break a habit I think is “bad” is to just stop doing it

FACT: You are a human. Humans are not perfect. Trying to “not” do something often creates turmoil inside us that actually makes you think about the undesirable habit more. Example:  if I say “I want to stop sitting on the couch eating snacks at night” I will start thinking about what snacks I want to eat while I’m sitting on the couch tonight (who’s with me?). If instead I say “I want to create a new habit of sipping flavored hot teas while I watch tv at night so I can start winding down” I am much more likely to do it

Myth: I can’t keep a new habit going because I’m (fill in the blank)

FACT: Usually not being able to start and keep a new habit is because it’s either not clear what you wanted to do or it was too big to start with. Tips for success:

  • Write it down on a post it note and put it somewhere you can see it
  • Use the STAR goal method
  • Decide if the habit is short term or long term
  • Ask someone who knows you if it’s easy to understand/do or if you need to break it down into a smaller habit
  • Don’t be afraid to adjust it if necessary

Myth: No one but me can make me stick to my new habit

FACT: Ummmm hello? Are you new to the group? This is the BEST PLACE to get help with accountability for a new habit and you may just have someone who wants to join you!

This Week’s Homework: #TheStickyHabitsClub

Your homework for this week is #TheStickyHabitsClub. You can ALL do this one, and you can do it together.  Pick one habit you want to start that you know would be better/easier with a buddy (maybe it’s making a grocery list and sticking with it, getting off the couch for a 5K, maybe a confidant to share how many points you use each day?)….and then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Don’t forget to do your homework #TheStickyHabitsClub and tag me when you share on social media!

Extra Credit: Air Fryer Grilled Peaches & Cream (Bonus: How to Pit a Peach Like a Pro!)

We had the pleasure of hosting The Peach Tent at KC Kitchen Center this weekend so naturally I’ve got a basket full of peaches to turn into a variety of seasonal favorites in our eggstra credit this week.

Before we get started though, do you know how to properly pit a peach? Here are the steps I follow for a perfect peach everytime:

  • Wash your fruit before you begin
  • Cut horizontally (not stem to tip)
  • Gently twist and remove the half without the pit
  • Using a grapefruit spoon (or similar utensil) gently dig around the pit on all sides
  • Remove the pit and enjoy!

There are so many different ways that you can prepare your peaches. We’ve already got a few ideas on the If You Have An Egg blog:

Peach Overnight Oats
Peach & Berry Cobbler
Air Fryer Peach Cobbler

And tonight we’re making Air Fryer Peaches and Cream!!

Next week we’ll be making even more delicious recipes with our peach haul including Peach Freezer Jam and Peach Salsa!
