News and Reviews

  1. I will be a little AWOL this week while John and I travel to Mifflinburg, PA for custom cabinet training. Anyone live near Mifflinburg?
  2. Deanna posted an interesting article from WW CEO Sima Sistani that I’m not ready to comment on yet. Not saying anything bad, just not ready to comment LOL
  3. There are only 12 days left to shop the WW Shop Closing sale…everything is now 50% off with no code needed!

Last week was Chat #343 “Ways to Keep Your Busy Life On Track!!”

Wow, it’s like WW knew we would be busy this time of year LOL.

It doesn’t seem to matter if you have a little family or alot, this time of year gets crammed with all kinds of “to do’s” whether you “decided” them or someone did it for you. Am I right?

3 fast facts from WW:

Don’t get glitter in your eyes

Healthy habits are harder to restart when we let the glitter of the holidays get in between us and what we’ve been doing the rest of the year.

Starting from scratch doesn’t always get you biscuits

Have you ever let a task get so far out of reach or so big that you think “well here we go, I’m going to have to start from scratch” (aka start all over or begin again)? I do that sometimes at work and touch and re-touch the same paperwork so many times I think I just need to put it all in a pile and start over again. Things like meal planning or tracking can be so overwhelming that it feels like that sometimes too doesn’t it?

Rather than being overwhelmed with a full blown tracker or menu, doing something like just opening your app or checking out a recipe for one dinner this  week can make you feel successful during this hectic time.

Put one foot in front of the other and soon you’ll be walking cross the floor (Winter Warlock, Santa Claus is Coming to Town)

It’s not even December and I’ve already started my plan to binge watch all the claymation Christmas movies like Santa Claus is Coming to Town and The Year Without a Santa Claus. Famous actors Keenan Wynn and Mickey Rooney talk a melted Winter Warlock across the floor and out the door by starting with just one foot in front of the other in this Christmas classic.

If your holiday seems like you can’t get from here to there, just try breaking it down into smaller steps like Winter did:

  1. Tracking every meal too overwhelming? How about tracking one meal a day during the holidays?
  2. Meal prep just not in the cards? Find one hour to enlist a family member or friend to help make soup or a big salad to enjoy the next few days
  3. Finding time to workout just not working out? I’m sure the dog would love an extra walk these days and those grandkids need a Christmas song dance party!

Your homework was #OneFootInFrontOfTheOther. Pick ONE THING you’d like to keep on your holiday to-do list that feels so daunting you are afraid you to-won’t get it done. Let us know how you will put one foot in the front of the other and walk out that door!

Let’s see how you did:

  • Lynn is putting one foot in front of the other to walk on by the candy making this year. If it’s not in the house she can’t eat it!
  • Knowing that she was getting ready for knee replacement surgery (she did great and is at home by the way!) and her husband would be in charge of cooking, Sylvia prepped and froze 12 crockpot meals!
  • Barbara put one foot in front of the other this holiday season by meeting with her dietician and then starting our 3 day detox!

Bravo, you did it!

This Week’s Topic: “Easy Steps to Overcome a Setback!!”

Raise your hand if you’ve ever experienced a setback.

The rest of you are either fibbing or just not paying attention LOL.

3 fast facts from WW:

Overcorrecting can land you in a ditch

Setbacks can lead to unnecessary behaviors like giving up or overcorrecting. Gwen told us a story about her grandson getting his tires off in a ditch, but because he was a new driver he overcorrected and ended up flipping his car upside down in the opposite ditch.

Now he’s fine, but don’t you feel like you are upside down in a ditch when you overthink or overreact to a setback sometimes?

And pssssst…giving up is NEVER the answer

Setback doesn’t mean failure

A setback is falling off a horse while you’re learning to ride. Riding the slope down on your bottom instead of your skis. Eating more on your holiday road trip than you planned.

Failure is having the horse put down, setting your skis on fire, or throwing away the 20 pounds you’ve already lost because you ate the whole bag of Bucees Beaver Nuggets

Open In Case of Emergency

While we were packing this week I found a 4 x 6 card that I wrote to myself years ago and had put in a drawer in the kitchen. I wish I had dated it so I could remember how long ago, but non the less there it was when I needed it for this moving / holiday / major life change season.

I consider these sticky notes, index cards, etc to be emergency tools in my tool kit. In case of an emergency (a bag of Bucees Nuggets on a road trip for example) I can open it (or in this case flip it over) and be reminded of a list I MADE to remind me of what I did another time to overcome a setback and not end of in a ditch.

Your list may not look like anyone else’s. If you told me I had to put “batch cook and then eat it every day” on my list we couldn’t be friends. For me things like:

  • Walk 5 days a week
  • Track one meal a day
  • Avoid extra sodium
  • Drink water before you drink coffee
  • Weigh in at your NEXT meeting

Have worked to get me back on track before and can work again if I just Open In Case of Emergency!

This Week’s Homework: #OpenInCaseOfEmergency

Your homework for this week is #OpenInCaseOfEmergency. Sorry the hashtag is so long for a second week Casey! For this week I want you to write yourself a little note that says “Remember the last time you had a setback?  This is what you did to stay out of the ditch!” and list 3 things that have worked in the past, put it in an envelope and write “Open In Case of Setback Emergency” on the outside.  Now DO YOUR HOMEWORK because I promise there is something in your fridge or pantry that needs to either be seen or unseen! Whatever it is let us know, I promise your decision to participate this week will help you AND someone else!  Then type it, snap it, share it however you like, and then tag me for your next cool badge!

Don’t forget to do your homework #OpenInCaseOfEmergency and tag me when you share on social media!

Extra Credit: Holiday Road Trip Tips!

As the prices of fast food gets higher and other temptations out on the road become greater, here are some of our favorite items that always go in our road trip packs!

Apples/Clementines/Other Fruit

Apples are our personal favorites! They are super sturdy and can be put in any bag without worrying about being smooshed while on the go.

And everyone loves apples… Alyssa said all 18 of her friends at school love them!

Clementines and other “sturdy” fruit like oranges and bananas are great as well, whatever your preference is. They are all great zero point items to add to bulk up any road trip meals.

Sweet & Salty Snack Mix/Nuts/Individually Packaged Snacks

These are not always low in points depending on the type you purchase, but they are individually packaged and remove the temptation of over eating.

You can eat one pack combined with a fruit and you are good to go!

Hard Boiled Eggs

I do recommend keeping the shell on these, and keeping them cool! Eggs are a great ZERO point option for protein and travel fairly easily in a chilled cooler. Keeping your protein up without running through a fast food place are always a plus on the road!

Cheese Cubes

Another great source of protein, but not always low in points. 7 cubes are 5 points, but paired with some nuts and a banana could make for a really great meal to keep your satisfied and away from gas station snacks.

Turkey Snack Sticks

This is one of Alyssa’s favorites. They do not have to be refrigerated until the package is opened, so keeping them sealed until you’re on the road is a great option to take with you!

Bagel Thins + Peanut Butter Cups = Delicious Sandwiches on the Go!

These are a no brainer. Add a banana to the mix and it makes a delicious, satisfying sandwich. I can’t count the number of these I’ve made in line at Disney! They are so simple and so yummy!

Savory Snack Bag

We fill up a reusable bag full of savory snacks, which is usually a pre-mixed snack that you can buy at the grocery store. I write the points on the front with a dry erase marker so I can still keep track of my points, but I can also enjoy my savory snacks!

Sweet Treat for the Road

If I tried to tell myself that I won’t be eating a sweet snack on the road… I’d be lying. Peanut M&M’s are my weakness, but thankfully I can make a sweet treat before I ever get in the car!

The one we used on the chat was the Indulgent snack mix from Aldi and we added almonds to it. Adding a protein to the mix is a great way to fill yourself up and prevent the temptation of eating the whole bag.
