News and Reviews

  1. John made it home safely Wednesday night! Thank you to everyone who prayed for and  checked on him 🙂
  2. We had our family Thanksgiving today and I’m proud to say I enjoyed what I wanted but didn’t have to break out the “buffet pants”
  3. If you’re here you survived turkey day! Did you get right back on track?

Last week was Chat #342 “How to Make Tricky Food Decisions (aka Thanksgiving is in 4 days!)!”

If you’re like me you started dreaming about the once a year foods once we got within the 7 day mark of Thanksgiving.

My sister got the “butter and love” gene from one grandmother and I got the “we all better keep apples and bananas out” gene from the other one.  Which one of us do you think people want to hang out with on holidays?

Even though you’ve probably known for a little bit what you are getting into on Thanksgiving (maybe even knew last year LOL) there are still some things you know about eating in tricky situations!

3 fast facts from WW:

Food is a turn on

Calm down, I don’t mean it like that! When you are faced with a food you love or even the thought of it, our brains “turn on” and we tend to stay focused on it. It’s normal, you just have to recognize it and not panic!

Don’t go to food prison

Completely swearing off certain foods can actually backfire and  make us want it more. One of Gwen’s leaders used to say if you put yourself in a little food prison you will spend all of your time planning what to do when you get out

Pick a Plan

Just being aware that this is a challenging time for food decisions can help. Make a plan for this day and stick with it!

  • Plan A – you are going to enjoy friends and family but will track what you eat on Thanksgiving
  • Plan B – no tracking going on but you will enjoy in moderation and then try to fit in some other things like a lighter meal before or after, or maybe some activity
  • Plan C – it’s one meal on one day. You aren’t tracking or worrying about it and will just enjoy this time

Whether you picked A, B or even C, having a plan and sticking with it already has you ahead of the curve! And even better, if you can go ahead and plan to get right back on track the next day you’ve already beat this holiday with dignity!

Your homework was #PickAPlan. This is probably the top 3 easiest homework you’ve ever done…Just let us know if you pick A, B or C from the plans listed above or if you have a wildcard plan of your own!

  • Julie has a blood test in 2 weeks so she was an A all the way this Thanksgiving!
  • Mary says she just went for it because it was one day and got back on track the next day!
  • Kathy was an A and a C, which was the perfect plan for her to enjoy the day AND just keep a watchful eye on what she was eating while she did it!

Bravo, you did it!

This Week’s Topic: “Ways to Keep Your Busy Life On Track!”

Wow, it’s like WW knew we would be busy this time of year LOL.

It doesn’t seem to matter if you have a little family or alot, this time of year gets crammed with all kinds of “to do’s” whether you “to decided” them or someone did it for you. Am I right?

3 fast facts from WW:

Don’t get glitter in your eyes

Healthy habits are harder to restart when we let the glitter of the holidays get in between us and what we’ve been doing the rest of the year

Starting from scratch doesn’t always get you biscuits

Have you ever let a task get so far out of reach or so big that you think “well here we go, I’m going to have to start from scratch” (aka start all over or begin again)? I do that sometimes at work and touch and re-touch the same paperwork so many times I think I just need to put it all in a pile and start over again. Things like meal planning or tracking can be so overwhelming that it feels like that sometimes too doesn’t it?

Rather than being overwhelmed with a full blown tracker or menu, doing something like just opening your app or checking out a recipe for one dinner this  week can make you feel successful during this hectic time.

Put one foot in front of the other and soon you’ll be walking cross the floor

(Winter Warlock, Santa Claus is Coming to Town)

It’s not even December and I’ve already started my plan to binge watch all the claymation Christmas movies like Santa Claus is Coming to Town and The Year Without a Santa Claus. Famous actors Keenan Wynn and Mickey Rooney talk a melted Winter Warlock across the floor and out the door by starting with just one foot in front of the other in this Christmas classic.

If your holiday seems like you can’t get from here to there, just try breaking it down into smaller steps like Winter did:

  1. Tracking every meal too overwhelming? How about tracking one meal a day during the holidays?
  2. Meal prep just not in the cards? Find one hour to enlist a family member or friend to help make soup or a big salad to enjoy the next few days
  3. Finding time to workout just not working out? I’m sure the dog would love an extra walk these days and those grandkids need a Christmas song dance party!

Extra Credit: After Turkey Day Easy Detox!

Many of you are on day 3 of leftovers, but we just had our Thanksgiving with family today. Good news, I enjoyed everything I wanted and was full but not miserable when we left. Even though I didn’t go overboard, we have had 4 days of salt, processed foods and then delicious buttery, sugary goodness.

It’s time for a good detox! Who’s with me? I am doing my Turkey Day Easy Detox Wednesday thru Friday of this week because #OneFootInFrontOfTheOther those are the days I can have my food ready, I have a little more control over those days, and it’s squeezed in between two other days when we are with or have the girls with us. Check me out doing my own homework this week!

My Top 8 Easy to Do Detox Ideas!
1 Ban the blue light: put down your computer, phone, tablet, etc at least an hour before you plan to go to bed. This will give your eyes a three day break and also allow your brain to settle down for a better night’s sleep. Sleeping 7-9 hours can actually help your brain rest and reorganize itself which helps eliminate toxic waste compounds that develop in your body each day
2 Limit or eliminate the alcohol: it’s just for three days but eliminating alcohol also gives your liver a three day break from processing the alcohol you consume
3 Try the MIND diet: my mother in law’s neurologist is a big time advocate for the MIND diet which in its simplest form focuses on foods that are brain healthy versus brain unhealthy. While she would encourage anyone worried about developing diseases like dementia, alzheimers and a host of other brain debilitating diseases, even following this theory for three days can knock out some cobwebs from all that sugar and extra fat this holiday. See my post at https://www.ifyouhaveanegg.com/exploring-the-mind-diet/ for a complete list of foods on the MIND diet
4 Poop: you’re just going to have to do it. Nothing cleans out your gut, your discomfort and even your attitude like making sure you consume enough fiber (AND WATER) to make sure you go 2 every day these three days
5 ACE the antioxidants: Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E (ACE) and other great antioxidants like selenium, lycopene, lutein and more can be found in berries, nuts, cocoa, vegetables, some spices. Even green tea has some amount of the highest antioxidants around!
6 Skip the salt: if possible reduce or eliminate any additional sodium from your diet these three days. Letting your body rest and process the naturally occurring sodium can get some of your cellular functions back in sync and get rid of some post holiday “bloat”
7 Veg Out: you literally cannot eat enough vegetables during this simple detox. My Detox Cabbage Soup is a great (and yummy!) way to get some in quick! Visit my blog at https://www.ifyouhaveanegg.com/detox-cabbage-soup/ for the details
8 H20!: Water, not flavored water. Not diet water. Not water infused with tea or coffee or drink mix. Water. Push it. Get it down. Adding sliced lemons or other citrus fruits (no sugar or sugar substitutes though) can give the water an additional kick in the detox pants

Remember this is for as little as one day but I’m hoping you’ll join me for just THREE DAYS.
